I’m thrilled to write about Takara Tomy’s recent release 2016 of their popular Drift Package Nano, the Toyota Corolla Sprinter Levin (AE86). It is hot, red and ready to drift now with LED lights pre installed. The packing box is 10 percent bigger than the previous car box. Why? The car size hasn’t increased any from the original 100mm 1/42 scale RC. This make is perhaps one of Takara Tomy’s most popular RC in the series. It is also a 


Now in red boasting LED running lights. The lights have a three-mode pattern steady on, flashing and strobe effect. Pushing on a button located on top of the chassis can activate it. They are effective in low light and the rear lights have active braking for realism. Rear lamps actually brighten as your finger applies the reverse braking trigger.


You get 1 2.4 GHz controller, a car body, chassis, a set of stickers, instruction manual and promotional material. They also released three other RC models in addition to this, which are a Nissan GTR G-Ready 3S RX, Mazda roadster ND type and Toyota 86. But of none at the moment include an active LED system. The quality on this edition is very nice because the time put in to hand paint the corolla is better than other cars. I’ve taken close looks at the other models and found lack of detail or bad paint flaws.

The 2.4 GHz controllers use 4 AA batteries and fully charge the RC within 20min.
It has a high and low power limiter; this is very useful if you are begging to learn drifting. It will offer you a bit more control especially in tighter spaces. The throttle input is digital proportional, which is important to drifting. You can use variable speeds. Unfortunately the steering isn’t, you only get full left or right. Still a big let down, but if they do implement this feature you can expect to pay a higher premium on your next purchase.  

The chassis still runs on a Li-ion 00 internal battery. As the battery ages it can be removed and recycled. The Tires are hard composite plastic excellent on smooth surfaces. Hard wood or fine synthetic low pile carpet recommended. Vacuum or dust area before drifting will save time unjamming strands of dirt from the wheels. It is a fixed short wheel base chassis. No long wheel base chassis available.

My final takes on the Levin (AE86):

Pros: Awesome painted body and nice active LED feature. Drifts well with this body, good balance.

Cons: Very noisy as sound echoes through this airy body. My Nissan Silvia is much quieter. Still the controller has a time lag when trying to reverse. The lag is a bit too long and seems like it is stuck. I'm sure it is a brake then reverse system.

The Ferrari Collection


It seems Kyosho Mini-Z are going retro! Last month they brought back classic bodies the Ferrari 575 GTC and Ferrari 250 GTO. Now today they dug deep in their Cad files to bring back almost all the hard to find Ferrari collection going back to 2004. The collection is composed of 15 bodies in all some were hard to find even on eBay. The great thing is they are back, but the down side is the rerelease might bring down the collectable value. You can find them now at your favorite hobby dealer while they are available.

A little monster of a truck! Micro RC

A while back ago I found this tiny RC monster truck. It has working front and rear LED lights as it drives. The tires are solid hard rubber that can really grip into dirt. The truck is no way a serious RC but just a fun way to unleash fury for five minutes down time. Included is a Ni-MH internal battery and operates on 20 - 40 MHz frequency. What would make it really cool is if it had independent front and rear suspension. because it doesn't it loses contact with surfaces and doesn't climb very well.

Building a Mini-Z HM buggy!

If you decide to add a hatchback to your line up of Mini-Z RC cars here is how to do it.
Whether you use a new, used or old school narrow chassis the choice is yours. I chose to use a MR03 chassis. No VE motor or Li-po battery needed on this build. It's too much power for high motor mount (HM) cars, there would be a roll over problem. That would be less enjoyment racing with friends.


It's a good thing to start off with a gyro for better stability on compact cars. If you started with a wide chassis you'll have to do the necessary conversion set up for the narrow chassis first. The included manual will show you how to do this.

20 radial narrow tires for rear.
I'm building a VW buggy which is a narrow hatchback so I need a set of narrow 30 tires for front tires and a set of narrow 20 radial for the rear.

The Eagle Racing aluminum motor mount is a good upgrade from the original plastic motor mount that suffers from fractures and cracks.

Start by installing the knuckle arms and upper arms to get that out the way, but don't forget to put in the purple soft springs along with it.

If needed use a fresh stock motor for optimal performance since they are replaceable.

The motor mount is equipped with a nice low profile heat sink, but the motor has high protruding soldering and glue that may cause rubbing on the car body. If so you can rotate the motor oppositely to prevent this, but sometimes the capacitor may cause a problem.
